  2. Hello,

I find myself asking about modifications or substitutes for exercises that I cannot do quite a bit these days. I am no stranger to HIIT, kettle bell, circuit, boxing and kickboxing etc., workouts. I like them because they are short and can be very effective for fat burning. Just clean up the diet. Yes, I know it’s easier said than done. BTW: I am an Endomorph somatotype….endo-meso I was told by a PT.

However, I have some mobility issues – arthritis in one of my knees and high blood pressure. Burpees are out of the question unless I do a “walking burpee” meaning “walk it out”with a hint of pep in your step. Lunges are another one. I can’t go terribly low on squats either. Thirty years ago these weren’t an issue but now they are unfortunately for me.

About me – I have been in and out of gyms (circa early 1980’s). Yes, back in the day I did those aerobic classes with the music that got faster and faster; you kicked up your legs as well to the music and I injured myself in the process. Was I doing resistance back then? Yes I did squeeze that in the majority of the time. Along with over use on the Stairmaster and other long, boring, steady state cardio. No wonder the big box gyms are losing money. You get a membership and then you are on your own pretty much. Then again, it’s always been like that. The next membership I plan on getting is at a gym that specializes in Powerlifting.

In the summer of 2013 I tried my luck with CrossFit just to see if I could do some of it and how far I would get. CrossFit is the bomb but not for anyone that has knee issues. The strength portion was good but I really liked the endurance part. My numbers were always low or I constantly lost track or didn’t understand how to count it. Kettle bells were fun and challenging. Those goblet squats were too much on my knees. Turkish get up? Oh well. At any rate, those memberships I had last summer came to a halt as they were a tad too expensive for my budget. Did I tell you I am a 60 year old female and a retired educator? Being retired makes a world of difference on your budget. (You are a long ways from it….just save your money and as much of it in places where you can’t touch it until you are at age 59.)

    Thank you for your time.
