How to get out of a funk and a doorway pull-up bar workout

Hey there,

I woke up in a bad mood every day last week. That’s not normal for me — I love mornings and usually can’t wait to start my day.

But every few months, like clockwork, I become a little less enthusiastic about getting out of bed in the morning. Even as a highly motivated, and goal-driven person, my normal zest for life wavers. It’s not full-on depression — I’ve been there — but I’m definitely not happy, either. The best word I can use to describe it is a funk.

Every time I feel like this, I always freak out a little. What if I’ll never feel happy, inspired, or motivated ever again? What if this is the new me?

Of course, that never happens. I always shake it off and eventually remember what it’s like to be my enthusiastic, motivated self. Over the years, I’ve experimented and found science-backed ways to return to baseline faster than before.

I wrote about these strategies here. I hope they help you next time you find yourself in a funk.

What I’m reading —

Your Symphony of Selves: Discover and Understand More of Who We Are by James Fadiman and Jordan Gruber

The premise of this book is that we each have more than one self — and likely many selves. By integrating the selves and bringing the best self forward for each situation, we can feel more harmonized and be “in the right mind at the right time” more often.

What I’m listening to (audiobook) —

Maybe You Should Talk To Someone: A Therapist, HER Therapist, and Our Lives Revealedby Lori Gottlieb

This is a wise, funny, and very human book about a therapist and what it’s like to be a therapist to others while going to therapy herself. I couldn’t stop listening to the audiobook.

A quote that inspires me —

“Don’t go through life. Grow through life!” — Eric Butterworth

What I’m training —

Here’s a quick workout you can do at home with a doorway pull-up bar.
